In a European premiere, Mazda Motor Corporation is presenting its new Takeri concept at this year’s Geneva International Motor Show along with the Mazda CX-5 compact crossover SUV.  A CD-segment saloon concept, the Mazda Takeri represents the latest expression of Mazda’s ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’ design theme.

Sharing centre stage in Geneva, the Takeri concept and CX-5 both embody the Mazda brand’s new KODO design theme and also utilise the company’s innovative SKYACTIV technologies: advanced engines, transmissions, bodies and chassis for a new generation of Mazda vehicles.

Mazda Takeri concept makes its European premiere
Europe is getting a taste of the future direction of Mazda’s next generation CD-segment saloon with the Takeri concept which inherits the vision of the Mazda Shinari, an exciting four-door sports coupe concept showcased in Geneva last year.

The Takeri features Mazda’s new and highly-efficient SKYACTIV-D clean diesel engine with i-stop and SKYACTIV-Drive automatic transmission.  Takeri also introduces Mazda’s brand-new i-ELOOP regenerative braking system, which aims for the ultimate in energy efficiency, but without compromising on fun-to-drive performance and handling.

All-new Mazda CX-5 marks a new era at Mazda
Designed to unite the best of all worlds, the Mazda CX-5 compact crossover being showcased in Geneva will certainly raise the bar for compact SUVs in Europe.  It’s the start of a new age.

The all-new Mazda CX-5 is set to arrive at Mazda dealers across Europe in spring 2012.  It is the first of an entirely new generation of Mazda vehicles to adopt the company’s exciting KODO design theme as well as the complete range of SKYACTIV technology developed entirely in-house at Mazda.

The CX-5 will be available with a choice of powerful yet exceptionally efficient four-cylinder SKYACTIV-D diesel and SKYACTIV-G petrol engines with i-stop - when developing these brand-new engines, Mazda opted for extreme compression ratios (14:1), resolving the conflicts that have until now prevented carmakers from taking this approach - and two new six-speed transmissions – the SKYACTIV-Drive automatic and SKYACTIV-MT manual – plus either all-wheel drive or front-wheel drive configuration.

Mazda’s new platform for CX-5 features the lightweight yet rigid SKYACTIV-Body and SKYACTIV-Chassis, ensuring outstanding passive safety and predictable and responsive driving to compliment the impressive powertrains.  The remarkable aerodynamics, also contribute its remarkable fuel economy, with CO2emissions starting at 119g/km.

On the inside, the CX-5 provides a lesson in extraordinary flexibility, with generous passenger comfort and abundant cargo space, plus active safety systems never seen before in this segment, like Mazda’s new Smart City Brake Support (SCBS)* and Lane Departure Warning System*.

The all-new Mazda CX-5 sets a new standard for the compact SUV segment in Europe.  With a design expressing vitality and agility and new technology delivering the performance to match its looks, the CX-5 symbolises Mazda’s ‘Sustainable Zoom-Zoom’ programme at its best yet.

2. European premiere – Mazda Takeri concept

The Mazda Takeri is the latest concept to adopt Mazda’s ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’ design theme.  Featuring Mazda's brand-new i-ELOOP regenerative braking system along with breakthrough SKYACTIV technology, the new-generation saloon concept being revealed to Europe at this year’s Geneva International Motor Show offers a look into Mazda’s future.

Uniquely sporty for a saloon in the hotly-contested CD-segment, the 4.85-metre long Mazda Takeri makes a strong statement about Mazda’s vision for beauty, efficiency and performance.  Inheriting the emotion of the Mazda Shinari, a four-door sports coupe concept unveiled in 2010 as the first incarnation of KODO, the Takeri reveals the direction of Mazda’s next-generation mid-sized saloon, the heart of the company’s product line-up.  The concept’s evolved styling projects a level of excitement and vitality unmatched in its class.

KODO – Soul of Motion
Over many years, Mazda has explored the various concepts of motion in nature to inspire its unique vehicle designs.  The instantaneous movement of animals – an ultimate form of motion, brimming with energy and emotion – inspired Mazda’s design team. It is the essence of Mazda’s ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’ design theme, which was developed under the guidance of Ikuo Maeda, Mazda’s head of design.

Accordingly, a whole new generation of Mazda vehicles, beginning with the CX-5 compact crossover SUV, will be influenced by the power and beauty found in nature, the vitality and agility, its strength and its depth.

The Mazda Shinari concept was a refreshingly unique four-door sports coupe. It was followed by the MINAGI concept, a compact crossover SUV and the forerunner of today’s Mazda CX-5 – the first mass production vehicle to fully embrace KODO.

Another glimpse at the future
Underneath the Takeri concept’s stunning exterior lurks a wealth of cutting-edge Mazda innovation.  Developed in pursuit of the ultimate in energy efficiency, it features Mazda’s highly efficient and lightweight SKYACTIV technology, which is being introduced to the mass market on the all-new Mazda CX-5 compact crossover SUV.

Takeri also introduces Mazda’s unique all-new i-ELOOP regenerative braking system which makes its world premiere at Geneva.

Under the hood, power is provided by the remarkably clean and efficient yet highly dynamic 2.2-litre SKYACTIV-D, the new-generation 175ps clean diesel engine that delivers torque over an exceptionally wide-rev band – as featured in the CX-5.  This engine is fitted with ‘i-stop‘, the world’s first* idle-stop system that restarts the clean diesel engine on the first compression stroke. Coupled with the new six-speed SKYACTIV-Drive automatic transmission, this engine ensures that the Mazda Takeri is extremely enjoyable to drive, delivering outstanding fuel economy without compromising on its superior, refined performance.

The Mazda Takeri is proof of just how far the company has come with its vision. Graceful efficiency and, of course, dynamic driving fun, all packaged in a captivating revelation for the future of the CD-segment.

The Mazda Takeri is equipped with the same SKYACTIV-D engine and SKYACTIV-Drive automatic transmission found in the new Mazda CX-5.  The concept marks the first appearance of Mazda’s innovative new i-ELOOP regenerative braking system.  This technology is the latest in Mazda’s step-by-step introduction of auxiliary systems to further enhance the efficiency of its SKYACTIV internal combustion engines.

Mazda’s new unique i-ELOOP regenerative braking system is the world’s first passenger car system that employs a capacitor to store the recovered electricity, which is then used to run all electric components.  Short for ‘Intelligent Energy Loop’, this system improves fuel economy by around 10 percent under stop-and-go driving conditions.  Mazda intends to progressively introduce i-ELOOP to its SKYACTIV-equipped model line-up in the years ahead.

Previously, the effectiveness of regenerative braking has been limited by the less-than-ideal charging and power storage characteristics of the lead-acid starter batteries typically used in vehicles.

When developing i-ELOOP, Mazda engineers aimed to create a system that generates the most energy possible.  Because a typical deceleration phase lasts only about 10 seconds, they adopted an Electric Double Layer Capacitor (EDLC), instead of a dedicated battery, to capture and temporarily store electricity within that brief period.  The system uses a 12V–25V variable voltage alternator to efficiently generate power and charge the capacitor, which can be fully recharged in just a few seconds – well within one deceleration cycle.  A DC/DC converter then steps down the voltage of the electricity in the capacitor to 12V to power electrical components in the vehicle, with any surplus electricity going to the starter battery.

Regenerative braking can produce most – and sometimes all – of a vehicle’s electricity needs.  These normally require some 10 percent of engine output to drive the alternator, so Mazda’s i-ELOOP regenerative braking thus increases fuel economy by up to 10 percent.

3. The all-new Mazda CX-5 – a new era dawns

Delivering enhanced driving enjoyment, the CX-5 marks the dawn of a new age at Mazda.  The first of a brand-new generation of Mazda vehicles, the compact crossover SUV embodies the best of all worlds – presenting consumers with a highly compelling package.

The all-new Mazda CX-5 SUV symbolises the latest advancement to Jinba Ittai, the feeling of oneness between car and driver first established by the Mazda MX-5 and now a core Mazda product characteristic.

As the first Mazda featuring the entire range of brand-new SKYACTIV technology for more efficient, more fun and more environmentally-friendly cars, CX-5 paves the way for the coming sixth generation of Mazda vehicles.  Developed using Mazda’s distinctive breakthrough approach to design, engineering and manufacturing, SKYACTIV successfully resolves conflicting objectives to produce a line of engines, transmissions, bodies and chassis that offer a new level of performance.

Its lightweight construction (it has one of the lowest kerb weights in its segment, starting at 1,310kg) and unique powertrains deliver all the qualities that make a vehicle fun to own, with outstanding torque, responsiveness and fuel economy, plus low emissions.

The driver’s extraordinarily good field of view is one example of the CX-5’s intelligent design, which boasts excellent passive safety enabled by the SKYACTIV programme’s complete body and chassis redesign is accompanied by active safety technology previously unheard of in this segment.

The innovative ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’ design theme provides the basis for Mazda’s bold new look, starting with a new ‘signature wing’ highlighting the redesigned front face.  Inside the roomy cabin, CX-5 takes flexible convenience to a new level, with refreshingly clever Karakuri features, such as the unique 4:2:4 three-way folding rear seats*, and a highly intuitive infotainment system*.

With its interior adaptability, predictable and responsive handling, class leading fuel economy and CO2emissions, the Mazda CX-5 instantly raises the bar for Europe’s compact SUV segment.  Mazda Corporation has a global sales target of 160,000 units per year for the CX-5, confident that

this all-new model will quickly become a core model for the brand, together with the Mazda2, Mazda3 and Mazda6.
